UMBRA actively participates in the annual NASA Student Launch (NSL) competition in April at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. NSL is a research-based, competitive and experimental exploration project that provides relevant and cost-effective research and development to support the Space Launch System, or SLS. The project involves reaching a broad audience of colleges and universities across the nation in an eight-month commitment to design, build, and fly payloads or vehicle components that support SLS. In order to compete, teams must go through a rigorous selection process that includes writing a formal proposal. Once schools are selected, the participating teams must draft and finalize a series of design reviews (Preliminary Design Review, Critical Design Review, Flight Readiness Review, and Launch Readiness Review) demonstrating their rockets' life cycle and safety inspection. These reviews will be published to UMBRA's website!
This year will be the ninth year of participation from Cal Poly Pomona. Over the course of eight months, we will design, build, launch, and fly a payload(s) and vehicle components that support NASA research on high-power rockets to an altitude of over 3000 feet above ground level (AGL)! The NSL team is comprised of 30 people that are divided into sub-teams such as avionics, payload, and structures. We will promote STEM through educational outreach events in schools around our community. Our team will work hard to ensure success for our rocket. We are excited to develop and document our journey with you!
